Day 12: To the Beach

July 18, 2005 4pm

A beautiful day today. We went for a short drive to the local castle “Schloss Glücksburg”, also very picturesque, being right on the water. Then we went for a walk along the beach; very pleasant with the breeze, the sun, and the water (info on Glücksburg in German: www.gluecksburg-ostsee.de. There were quite a few sailboats out taking advantage of the perfect sailing weather. Could also see the Danish coastline across the water. Noticed that there were a lot fewer inhibitions here than in the U.S.; there were a few women sunbathing topless with no one making a big deal about it.

Still haven't heard anything about the flight yet; doesn't look like it'll happen today.

The house that my Mom & Aunt live in originally belonged to their parents, my grandparents. It was built for my grandparents in 1951 as part of a tract home development project. My grandfather's profession was mason; a lot of the stone work of the house was done by him. Some of the stone work involved mixing different types of stones in a colored cement, then pouring the mixture into a form or on the floor and then polishing the surface of the concrete once it has cured. Though it is fairly difficult work (very labor intensive) it can create a very long-lasting and beautiful surfaces. Much of the house has surfaces created this way, including the kitchen floor and most of the window sills.

The original house was very efficient (that is, small). Since it was built, my grandfather added quite a bit to the original floor plan; he did much of the work himself. I can really get a feel for how efficient the house was when I walk up to and down from the bedroom I'm staying in on the 2nd floor; the stairs are so narrow that I barely fit half my foot on them. It takes some getting used to, especially going down the stairs when the ball of my foot hangs out over nothingness each step. My grandfather added a nice living room area first, then later added another bedroom and a sunroom toward the back of the house.

Even with the additions, everything is pretty small in comparison to what we have in the U.S. There is no counter space in the kitchen, the stove is small, and the refrigerator seems downright tiny. The kitchen would be small for an apartment. But my Aunt and my Mom are quite comfortable with it and make the best use of the available space.
