Day 12: Beginnings
June 18, 2005 2pm
I had a nice time with Mom last night. My aunt had fixed a very good lunch, which we had for dinner since I came so late in the day. Then I typed up a few blog entries while Mom watched a program on TV. Also called Sherri and left a message for my aunt Uta, as she and Aubrey were on their way to France to play some golf and attend a reunion.
My cousin Christoph in Sweden had mentioned a summer festival that happens when summer starts. He thought the festival was on the 25th of June, so I figured to get there in time, I would have to leave my Mom's on Wednesday, the 22nd of June. That allowed me to spend several days with my Mom.
Mom said she had tried to arrange a sightseeing ride in a small airplane through a friend today, but she was supposed to have gotten a call by now so it may not pan out. If it doesn't, we'll try for Monday instead.
I'm getting a taste of the longer days as I'm heading north. The sun goes down at about 10:30pm; there's still a “dusk” until about midnight. I know that as I head further north to my cousin's, it will be even more noticeable. Checking my PDA Pocket PC “Ephemeris 1.0” program (a freeware program from Jonathan Sachs which shows sun- and moon-rise and -set times and moon phases according to location and calendar), the sun rises at 2:26am and sets at 11:30pm in Hävsnäs, Sweden; the home town of my cousin. Here in Flensburg, it comes up at about 4:30am and sets at 10pm; still a short night but not nearly as short as it is at my cousin's location.
